Meijer is an American regional hypermarket chain based in Michigan. It was established in the year 1934 as a supermarket chain and is credited with pioneering the concept of modern supercenter in 1962. Around half of the 196 locations of the company are situated in Michigan, with other stores located in Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio. It was included on Forbe’s 2008 list of largest private companies in America and was ranked No. 18 and 19 in Fortune’s 2008 as one of the 35 largest private companies in the US. It was ranked 12 by the Supermarket News in 2007 as one of the top retailers of North American food. It has estimated sales in 2006 of $13.2 billion. Overall, based on income, Meijer is the twenty fifth largest US retailers.
